REVIEW OF “THE ASSOCIATE”-- JOHN GRISHAM
REVIEW OF “THE
ASSOCIATE”-- JOHN GRISHAM ★★⋆
Kyle McAvoy:- A bright law student at Yale who has many job offers from several law firms including Scully & Pershing; the topmost law firm in NY.
Other characters on Kyle’s side: - his dad, his mom, his friends from college, Elaine, his friends for Scully & Pershing, his lawyer, FBI agents, Partners in Scully & Pershing
Bennie Wright: - Kyle's blackmailer with unlimited resources and every possible information regarding Kyle and everybody around him.
Other characters on Bennie’s side: - Few goons, few partners in crime, and who knows who else.
Plot: - The plot revolved around how Kyle follows Bennie’s order and slowly began plotting against his blackmailer. Most of the pages dedicated to how law firm works and their main concern of billing the clients as much as possible, and lives of associates and partners.
Bennie blackmailed Kyle to get into Scully & Pershing and steal high-valued sensitive information related to a multibillion lawsuit. Kyle surrendered because Bennie held a video from Kyle and his three friends’ past, which if released can destroy their future.
Kyle took Joey on-board to click photographs of Bennie and his underlings. Later, Joey steps back when someone murdered Baxter Tate because he talked to Elaine and was about to meet her for forgiveness and reconciliation.
Kyle visited his father and told him everything. His father approached Elaine’s lawyer to settle the matter. Kyle also hired a criminal lawyer and former FBI operative, Roy Benedict to take care of Bennie. FBI got involved to solve the case.
On the D-day, their operation to catch Bennie misfires, and they were unable to locate and identify the blackmailers till the end. However, Kyle was sure that Bennie was working for some other government agency which is why he escaped smoothly without a print.
Later, Kyle confesses everything to the firm partners, willingly left the firm, and agreed not to practice law in NY. He also denied any FBI security.
In the end scene, he walked out of the lawyer’s office after discussing his plan of starting a partnership law firm with his father in his hometown to solve real cases and help real people.
The plot was well-crafted, all characters were well connected, and the story was easy to read. Apart from sudden ending that left me hung in the air, few things were questionable,
1. the most secure computer systems in Scully & Pershing don’t raise an alarm when an external USB drive was plugged in.
2. We don’t know who Bennie was, who he worked for, or where he has gone in the end. Who helped Bennie to get insider information?
3. No idea of the lawsuit and its outcomes.
4. Deal with Elaine’s lawyer was not quite clear
I am finding the next book in the series. 😶
Now, rating this novel: - 2.5/5 ★★⋆
